Venice: Plan Around the Crowds, Not the Checklist

Description
Venice is small, car-free and crowded. The trip works when the big ticketed sights are booked ahead and the rest of the time goes to wandering back streets.
Venice has no roads, so a day is shaped by walking and boats. Piazza San Marco, the Basilica and the Doge's Palace are the unavoidable core, and all three are worth timed tickets. A gondola ride costs a fixed rate of around EUR 80 for 30 minutes per boat, so share it; the cheap alternative is the traghetto across the Grand Canal for a couple of euros, or a vaporetto ride on line 1.
Day trips to Murano and Burano by water bus fill a half day, and a late afternoon in Dorsoduro or Cannaregio shows a quieter city. Most overnight visitors pay an entry fee on busy days and a city tax at the hotel, so check the calendar before booking. Hotels on the island are expensive; many travellers sleep in Mestre and take the train in.
