An imperial capital that is easy to walk, with palaces, art museums and a coffeehouse culture that gives every afternoon a natural break.

Vienna is built around the Ringstrasse, with the Hofburg, the Opera, St Stephen's Cathedral and the museum quarter all within a short tram ride. Schönbrunn is the main day: a Schönbrunn Palace ticket with the Grand Tour costs about EUR 40 to 42, and the Sisi ticket (about EUR 40) adds the Hofburg and the Imperial Furniture Collection. The Belvedere houses Klimt's The Kiss, with entry around EUR 16.

Evenings suit a concert, since Vienna has a daily programme of classical music. Cheap standing tickets at the State Opera are a good-value way in. Between sights, stop at a coffeehouse: Café Central, Demel or Sperl. Austria is easy for vegetarians, with several fully vegetarian restaurants and Indian options in the centre.
