Munich is a natural stop on routes that link Austria, Germany and Switzerland, and Lufthansa flies direct from Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru, so it also works as the first or last city of a trip. Two or three nights give you Marienplatz with its Glockenspiel, the Residenz palace, the English Garden, Nymphenburg Palace and a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle, the fairy-tale castle that inspired Disney.
Bavarian food is famous for meat, but vegetarians manage well. Pretzels, Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), potato dumplings with mushroom sauce, Obatzda cheese spread and apple strudel are on most menus, and the beer gardens serve vegetarian dishes alongside non-alcoholic drinks. Munich also has a good choice of Indian restaurants.
Munich is one of the pricier German cities, and hotels jump during the Oktoberfest weeks in late September and early October: avoid those dates unless you are coming for the festival. Neuschwanstein tickets are timed and sell out weeks ahead in summer.
