Menus and opening hours change, so check before you go. Fully vegetarian means the whole menu is vegetarian; vegetarian options means the restaurant serves meat too. Jain, no-onion-no-garlic and Swaminarayan food: ask for it when ordering, and expect it mostly at Indian restaurants.
Eating vegetarian and Jain in Europe: what to know
- Vegetarian is easy, Jain needs asking. Every city on this site has vegetarian restaurants, and most menus mark vegetarian (V) and vegan dishes. Onion, garlic and root vegetables are in many sauces and soups, so for a Jain meal you have to ask each time.
- Watch for hidden meat and egg. Soups, risotto and sauces are often made with meat or fish stock, some cheeses use animal rennet, and fresh pasta usually contains egg. Ask before you order.
- Italy, Greece and Spain are the easiest. Pizza margherita, pasta with tomato or pesto, Greek salads and vegetable mezze, and Spanish patatas bravas are vegetarian almost everywhere. Switzerland and Central Europe are more meat-heavy outside the big cities.
- Indian food is everywhere. London, Paris, Amsterdam, Zurich and most capitals have Indian and pure-vegetarian restaurants, and many Indian travellers plan one Indian meal a day.
- Self-catering helps families. A room with a kitchenette, a supermarket nearby and a few ready-to-eat packets from home make breakfasts and late dinners simple, especially in Switzerland where eating out is expensive.
