Salzburg: Mozart, a Fortress and The Sound of Music

Description
A small baroque city under a medieval fortress, with the Alps on the horizon. Two days covers the old town, the fortress, and the Sound of Music locations.
Salzburg's old town is a UNESCO site that you can cross on foot in ten minutes: Mozart's birthplace on Getreidegasse, the cathedral, Residenzplatz and the funicular up to Hohensalzburg Fortress. The fortress (dating from 1077) has museums and views over the roofs; a funicular plus entry ticket costs around EUR 16 to 20.
The Sound of Music tour is the most popular excursion (a four-hour tour is about EUR 75), taking in Mirabell Gardens, Leopoldskron Palace and the lakes of the Salzkammergut. Hallstatt is a longer day trip, often combined in an eight-hour tour for about EUR 148. Salzburg has some good vegetarian cafés, mostly a short walk from Mirabell.
